I've been interested in quantum mechanics for years and struggled to learn it, and I feel like I made so much progress by studying the foundations taught in this course. While it doesn't teach QM directly, it teaches a lot of the math that supports QM.
If you've ever wanted a better understanding of linear algebra, tensors, complex numbers, and/or quantum information theory, this is the course for you. Well, the first half of the course is for you. The second half of the course focuses more on benchmarking, error correction, and error mitigation, which I wasn't my cup of tea, but YMMV.
Good
- Content: IMO the (first half of) course content is SO interesting. I just feel like I understand how the universe works so much better now.
- Labs: Fantastic. Labs have an autograder (easy 100), aren't too time-consuming (as long as you read the instructions carefully), and really helped me understand the material. Each was <5 hours.
- Problem Sets / Knowledge Checks: I found problem sets to be a great way to check my understanding. Combined with the weekly knowledge checks (unlimited attempts, free points), they also served as a great guide for studying for the exams. KCs each took me ~1hr and PSs took 1-3hrs.
- Paper Reviews: I enjoyed most of the papers. The paper reviews were quite chill, just rigorous enough to push you to engage with the paper, without needing to stress too much about getting full points on the review. Each took 2-3hrs.
- Lectures: I used the course lectures for the second half of the course and found them sufficient, roughly 1hr/week.
- Textbook: I only used the textbook for the first half of class content. I also read "Quantum in Pictures" (highly recommend -- its written for children so you can get through it in an afternoon) and a number of chapters from "Picturing Quantum Processes" to get a more visual intuition of the algorithms, but we were never tested that deeply on the algorithms, so it was beyond course scope.
- TAs: I never went, but we had TA office hours 7 days a week. They were also very responsive to questions.
- Exams: The midterm and final only 10% of your grade each, and each allowed a double-sided note sheet.
Bad
- Lecture videos are not available for download.
- Lectures: For the first half of the class, lectures were not "bad" per se, but IMO they just aren't comprehensive enough to deeply teach all the math needed in this class. I used Qiskit "Foundations of quantum computing" and Quantum Soar on YouTube as main lectures for this class, and then the class lectures only as supplements if I was having trouble.
Overall, I'm not sure if I had a very representative experience. I just really enjoyed the material, so I did a lot more than the course required. I spent the 3 weeks leading up to the class learning the math (before this summer, I had never really used imaginary numbers before, so I've come a long way), and even still probably spent maybe ~30 hours/week in the first half, and ~10 hours/week in the second half? I got a high A, but the bar for a low A seems to require far less time/effort.
Advice: I learned the most by feeding the textbook to ChatGPT and having it give me lots of practice problems. IMO you won't understand the course content without doing lots and lots of practice problems.
